MTH-5105-1 – Conics

This course features conics, that is, figures obtained by cutting a cone with a plane at different angles. The conic sections covered in this course are the circle, the parabola, the ellipse and the hyperbola. These curves are examined through their respective equations or inequalities and different parameters. Given equations and inequalities, learners will graph the corresponding conic sections. They will also do the reverse, that is, given the graphs of conic sections, they will find the corresponding equations or inequalities. This course also focuses on solving problems involving conics.

• Equation of a Line Tangent to a Circle;
• Standard Form of the Equation of a Parabola;
• Graphing a Relation Defining a Parabola;
• Graphing an Ellipse Centred at the Origin;
• Graphing a Hyperbola Centred at the Origin;
• Equation or Inequality Associated with the Graph of a Conic Section;
• Finding the Equation of a Conic Section Using the Description of another Conic Section;
• Equations and Geometric Loci;
• Solving Problems Involving Conics.

Evaluation:

A supervised ministerial examination in an adult education centre.

Passing mark: 60%
