GGR-5024-3 – The Populations of Québec and Canada – 3rd Edition

The course The Populations of Québec and Canada introduces the learner to the principal characteristics of the populations of Québec and Canada through the use of demographic concepts. The course looks at issues such as population trends, the reasons underlying uneven population distribution and the diversification of the population. Where appropriate, statistics from the 1996 and 2001 censuses have been used to demonstrate demographic concepts.

• Factors influencing demographic evolution;
  - Fertility, mortality, migration, emigration and immigration;
  - Population growth and population pyramids;
• Ethnic and linguistic composition of the population;
  - Ethnic groups and ethnic origins in Québec and Canada;
  - Linguistic groups, mother tongue and home language;
• Distribution of the population throughout Québec and Canada;
  - Population size and density in the regions of Québec and in the provinces and territories of Canada;
  - The settlement of Québec and Canada;
  - The urban and rural populations of Québec and Canada;
• Conclusion and review exercises.
