HST-4016-2 – From the First Nations to the Union of Upper and Lower Canada – 2nd Edition

This is the revised and expanded 2nd edition of the first course of the History of Québec and Canada, which sets out the great moments of the history of Québec and Canada from the first contact between the French and the First Nations to the eve of Confederation. Particular attention is paid to including the history of the First Nations and situating our history in the international context.

The 2nd edition guide is complete in itself and includes theory and exercises, as well as review exercises, synthesis sections, and a summary for each chapter.

• Introduction to the discipline of history. Situating the course in time. 
• Characteristics of First Nations societies before colonization.
• Europe at the time of the great explorations. Jacques Cartier’s voyages. 
• The beginnings of the French colony. The First Nations and the fur trade.
• Jean Talon’s New France: political, demographic, social and other aspects.
• Great Britain and the War of the Conquest. The Military Regime.
• The British Regime from 1763 to 1791. The Royal Proclamation. The Québec Act.
• The Rebellions of 1837-1838: causes and events. The Durham Report and the Act of Union. 
• The United Province of Canada until the 1850s. Responsible government, abolition of the seigneurial regime. Emergence of the problems that led to the Confederation.
